Developed at the University of Wisconsin, SMR 58 (Scab and Mosaic Resistant) was bred specifically for resistance to cucumber scab and mosaic virus — two of the most common and damaging cucumber diseases — making it one of the most reliable pickling cucumbers available for home and market gardens. Growing Notes
Direct sow outdoors after the last frost, when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Space plants 12–18 inches apart in full sun. Trellis or stake vines for best production. Water consistently. Harvest frequently — regular picking encourages continuous production.
